UK extreme road and track car manufacturer Radical Sportscars will mark its debut appearance at the Geneva Motor Show on 03-15 March by launching the RXC Turbo 500, a 530bhp variant of its road coupe. The RXC Turbo 500 takes the RXC’s performance into true hypercar territory – and to prove this the marque will be returning to the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife for a new assault on the production car lap record in August.
The RXC Turbo 500 is the culmination of five years’ development to create a road-legal track car unlike any other. The latest engine management and forced induction technology has been utilised to raise the performance bar even higher, with the new model delivering over 530bhp at 6,100rpm and an incredible 481lbft at 5,000rpm, endowing the car with a power-to-weight ratio of over 462bhp per tonne – well in excess of established supercar models.
In-gear acceleration and response improves dramatically as a result, with an RXC now accelerating from 0-100mph in just 6.8 seconds, and mid-range acceleration from 40-80mph in a class-leading 3.0 seconds. Coupling this astounding performance with Radical’s trademark lightweight, high-stiffness chassis technology and advanced Le Mans-honed aerodynamics, has resulted in a road car with performance capabilities that exceed those of dedicated racing cars.
The RXC Turbo 500 upgrade package includes: • Twin high-performance water-cooled Garrett GT28 turbochargers fitted with steel ball bearing cartridges, and specially designed anti-surge compressor housings • Owen Developments twin-phase anodised actuators for precise boost control • New custom-designed heat shields fitted to reduce engine bay temperatures • Re-machined, fluid optimised intake manifold upgraded to contain six high-performance Ford fuel injectors. The addition of these allows for performance staged, secondary port injection that improves fuel atomisation at higher engine speeds with increased flow rates – a system developed by Radical and now adopted on Ford’s high-performance Ford GT concept • Twin additional fuel rail upgrade with new motorsport fuel lines • Upgraded race proven fuel regulator • New high-flow Ni-Resist alloy exhaust manifolds designed to improve the exhaust flow rate, providing maximum turbine speeds, reduced spool time and improving top end performance • New large-diameter motorsport-specification exhaust system, with improved flow rate • LIFE engine management system mapping upgrade optimised to the increased power output for ultimate performance and drivability
Radical’s founder and Managing Director Phil Abbott is delighted with the results. “Our outstanding technical team wanted to deliver something really special in the RXC Turbo 500, and I think they’ve definitely moved the game on.
“The partnership between the RXC’s accessible aerodynamics and grip, and the ballistic performance of the Turbo 500’s high-performance Ford EcoBoost powerplant delivers an intoxicating, spectacular driving experience like no other road car.”
Full European Type Approval has now been achieved for the RXC Turbo after a year of certification including crash testing, emissions and noise assessment. The RXC Turbo can be road registered in any European Community (EC) member state as well as a host of other countries worldwide.
RXC Turbo 500 aims to extend Radical’s ten-year-long reign at the Nürburgring
To showcase the speed, grip, balance and exploitability of the new package, Radical will be returning to the Nürburgring Nordschleife road course in Germany this August, for an attempt to beat its own, long-standing production car lap record. The company’s SR8 LM open sportscar has held the record since 2005, first with a 6m55s lap then lowered to 6m48s by Michael Vergers in 2009. Radical will follow the same transparent procedure as before, driving the record car the 480-mile journey from its Peterborough, UK headquarters to the circuit nestled high in the Eifel Mountains of Germany.
There will be three record runs. The car will wear Dunlop SportMaxx road tyres for the first run on the gruelling 20.8km, 154-km course - the same tyres on which it arrives from the UK. The team will then switch to the Dunlop Direzza D03G road-legal performance tyre, as used for Radical’s previous successful record attempt. Finally the Dunlop SP Sport slick tyre will be used, highlighting the adaptability and easy adjustment of the RXC Turbo 500 and the broad ability of the Dunlop performance tyre range."
