Efni:523i manual / rate of revs drop between gears
Fréttahópar:alt.autos.bmw
I have a UK 1997 523i with manual gearbox. I have found the following
behaviour upon changing gear which seems to be different to every other car
I have driven.
When accelerating up through the gears, when you depress the clutch, the
revs seem to 'linger' - they don't drop down as quickly as I have
experienced on other cars. The best way to describe it is you take your foot
off the accelerator and the revs stay constant for perhaps a second before
falling away.
This makes it more difficult to perform smooth, fast upchanges as the revs
are too high - hence you get a jerk as you release the clutch unless you
slip it - which isn't normal un an upchange.
Has anyone else noticed this behaviour? Is it just the way I drive? Has my
coordination finally failed me and should I buy a nice auto....

BMW has a Service Letter 12 17 99 that addresses this issue. It applies to
cars with the M52 TU engine. By series, applicability is E46 323i and 328i
produced 4/98 through 3/99, E39 528i/T produced 9/98 through 3/99, and Z3
produced 8/98 through 3/99.
The fix changes the two wire clutch switch to a three wire switch, and
updates the DME software to allow a quicker RPM roll off when the clutch
pedal is depressed.
