Next stop, the Mercedes Museum. Opened in 2006, the building is cleverly designed, using three overlapping circles with the centre removed.

Incredibly, all the cars in the above photos are in the reception area, we hadn't even entered the museum yet!

Entry to the museum is 8 Euros (4 Euros if your'e over 60 - Which kept my dad happy :karl: )

Upon entering the museum, you are transported to the top floor in a lift, which looks like something out of a 1930's Flash Gordon film.

Image

The history of motoring from the 1880's to present day is then available to you, no other manufacturer can boast this sort of history - Can they?

The Mercedes-Benz Rennwagen-Schnelltransporter, built in 1955, it was cabable of transporting a racing car at over 100mph. The original version no longer exists, this a brilliant recreation, built using the original drawings.

Image

The 300 SLR Coupé, also known as the Uhlenhaut Coupé, the car was developed as a race car for the 1956 season, it is basically a hardtop version of the 300 SLR racing car which Stirling Moss raced so successfully in 1955, but Mercedes withdrew from motorsport in 1955, so it was never used and became the company car of chief test driver Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

Image

Uhlenhaut once drove between Stuttgart and Munich in less than one hour driving this car, which must be an average speed of well over 150mph, the car was capable of 180mph, not bad for 1955.

Image

Image

Only two 300 SLR Coupés were ever built, Mercedes still own both of them, they must surely be some of the most valuable cars in the world

Mercedes-Benz SSK - Bulit in 1928 for hillclimb events, the car had 225bhp, it was successful enough to ensure that it cemented the Mercedes brand as one of the best, a reputation that still remains today

Mercedes-Benz have also long been one of the leaders in world of trucking.

This model was known as the millipede because of the two front steering axles, it was introduced in 1958 when the German government brought in rules restricting axle loads on truck in a bid to protect the railways.

Unimog U 500 - Mecedes have been building the Unimog since 1951. This model can clear an amazing 1600 tonnes of snow per hour

For twenty six years Professor Sid Watkins served as head of the Formula One on-track medical team, now in his eighties he still works on developing safety for motorsport, he has been behind projects such as the HANS device and improved helmet material (which probably saved Felipe Massa in 2009)

C32 AMG F1 Medical car

Image

Although this looks like the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters, it is actually the Mercedes-Benz 300 Messwagen, which translated means measuring car, it was used by the test department to record data from cars during test runs, we now take telemetry for granted, but back in 1960 things were quite different!

Image

The G-Wagen Popemobile needs no introduction, the 500 SL created headlines in the early 1990's when Princess Diana became the first member of the British royal family to drive a private foreign car, after critisism from the UK government and trade unions she returned the car.

W196 R - These cars were used in Formula 1 during 1954/1955 by drivers such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss

One of the original Silver Arrows racing cars from the 1930's, not until the 1980's would grand Prix cars again produce this sort of power, an amazing period in motor racing history

Image

500 SLC rally car, Mercedes had started to take rallying seriously in the late 1970's, this car was the last to compete on a WRC round, driven by Bjorn Waldegard, it won the 1980 Ivory Coast Rally, Mercedes then decided to withdraw from rallying, a decision made after Audi revealed the Quattro.

Ég ELSKA F1-bílana frá Mercedes/McLaren, hef setið í þeim nokkrum, geggjaðar græjur !

Einnig var mjög gaman að skoða einkasafn af Ferrari-bílum Michaels Schumacher í Kerpen, Germany.
