E30 M50 ENGINE CONV PARTS LIST

"1. E30 88' radiator, I used the e36 unit with the lower mounts raised
2. E30 88' radiator over flow tank
3. E30 M20 fan, poss. w/clutch
4. E28 533i motor mounts w/ 5mm spacers or e28 m5 mounts with out spacers
5. E34 throttle cable
6. E21 brake booster w/ modified shaft, to 15mm or 325IX/e32 735 without mod to the shaft
7. E34 M5 or 25mm brake master cylinder w/ additional brake line used for the 325ix booster
or a e32 735i with the modified 320i booster
8. E30 325 trans X-member
9. E28 m5 or two 320i trans mounts/ which are cheaper
10. E30 M3 driveshaft or i used the front of the e36 mated to the rear of my e30 M3 have it rebalanced
11. E30 diff. w/ 3:25 ratio or E28 533i w/ 3:25 LSD
12. E30 318 ECU mount
13. E34 oil pan
14. E34 oil pickup
ect. ect.
15. E36 m3 exhaust manifold
16. M50 radiator hoses
17. E36 M3 Motronic
18. OBDI intake manifold
19. OBDI throttle body boot
20. E36 alloy mounting arms
21. OBDI wiring harness DO NOT BUY silver label “413” motronic, it has EWS (security),
it can only put into original chassis
22. the engine harness and the ECU are all E36 M3.
On the standard E30 with M20 engine fitted, you have the large round plug (C101) up on the firewall next to the brake booster.
This plug has 2 parts. One half is connected to the car wiring, and the other is connected to the engine harness.
When the M20 was removed, the engine side of the plug was removed with the engine. Now I have the S50 half of the plug in its place. Although similar in appearance, it will not plug directly into the E30 half of the plug.
I removed the E36 engine half of the plug, and replaced it with an E30 one. This then allows the 2 parts to screw back together. All you need to make sure is that you have the correct wires connected to each other. Its not just pin 1 to pin 1 and pin 2 to pin 2 etc (although some of the wires do actually connect this way).
This plug connection is the only point where the E30 & E36 wiring interface with each other. The rest of the E36 M3 engine harness is totally self contained.

23. the exhaust from the downpipe to the muffler is all custom made

*Engines* A basic rundown of the engine options available. You will need the accessories for what ever engine setup you choose.
M50B25- Non vanos rated at 189 hp
M50B25tu- Vanos 189 hp +3 ftlb tq
M52B25- 179 hp
M52B28- 193 hp This motor was available in a cast iron or aluminum block. The aluminum block is from the Z3
S50B30- 240 hp This came from the 95 M3 only
S50b32- 240 hp

*Parts List*

-E36 M50 Alloy mounting arms- These are a dircet bolt on and can be had new at the dealer for around $80

-E34 M50 Oil Pan, pick up, and dipstick/tube

-E28 M5, 535, or AKG M50 Swap Motor Mounts

-Brakes- You have a few options:
Relocate the stock booster over about 1/2 inch (search white325is booster to find more info and pic about this, PLEASE DON'T PM HIM, the info is around.).
E30 325ix booster, spacer and master with a remote resevoir, or you can modify the shaft, not run the booster and not have to have a remote resivoir.
Modify E21 1977-83 320i booster
Run a 7 series ?? remote booster setup
Pre modified E21 booster through akg/treehouse/zionsville.
Porsche 944 booster off an '89, trim the bottom corner off about 4 manifold fins. The shaft needs to be shortened by about an inch and threaded further by about the same amount. The dimensions are roughly 9 1/4" across, and 3 3/4" thick. It's an ATE part # is 94435502503 (Porsche's part number)
Porsche 911 booster off an '82. Measurements: it is about 8" inches around, and it is 3.5" from the the part that goes against the firewall to the brake booster flange. The rod needs to be extended exactly 1.675" I went 1.75" and it was just a hair longer than I would have liked. (Thanks for the info someguy2800!)
E32 740 booster with e34 525 master cylinder and remote resevoir.

-E34 525 Throttle cable- Has a 90* bend which works great

-ECU- The easiest thing to do is to run the ecu that goes to your motor. If it has EWS simply get an EWS Disabling chip. You're gunna get a chip anyways right? The silver lable 413 ecu HAS EWS. The red lable 413 does not have EWS. You need the M42 E30 318i ECU mount to properly mount the ecu in the glovebox. Part # is 13 62 1 286 077. This link has some good info-http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showpost.php?p=926692&postcount=28

-Tranny mounts- I like to upgrade to at least e21 mounts as they are bigger and more rugged. The stock mounts are weak and have a lot of movement to them. You can run poly mounts too, but the e21 mounts are cheap.

-Exhaust- There are supersprint replica headers on ebay that work great cause they are cheap (around 110 shipped), look good, and clear the control arm. You can use the e36 manifolds and a modified e36 center section. If you are on a tight budget you can always modify the stock exhaust too. Basically it is up to you on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

-Transmission/Driveshaft- There are many different options as far as what transmission you can run. In the end for most it comes down to money.

*The stock E30 325i/e Getrag 260 will bolt up to the transmission without a problem but the shifter will be put to the right side of the shifter console 12*. You can cure this by either cutting and welding the linkage or heating and twisting the linkage. You will also need to modify your tranny cross member on one side. You will need to run the M20 single mass flywheel and starter. Also you will need to grind down some of the oil pan or have the back side of the flywheel machined to clear. The stock M20 driveshaft will work for this transmission. I like to run at least an E21 tranny mount, you can use poly too but it is more expensive. The stock e30 mounts will work but they are soft and can cause the motor to move more than you want when running a mechanical fan causing you to need a new radiator.

*The Getrag 240 out of the E30 318i with an M42- you will need to use the M20 flywheel and starter for this application as well. You will also need the Euro 323i throwout bearing part # 21-51-1-204-525. You can use the stock M42 transmission cross member and mounts. You need a driveshaft out of an E36 325 and E30 Center support bearing.

*The Getrag 250 out of a E36 325i is known as a weak tranny (I killed one in about 6 months) This tranny uses the stock tranny cross member your choice of poly E30 mounts, E21 mounts or stock E30 325i mounts as stated above. The E36 325i driveshaft with an E30 center support bearing mounted backwards or a stock E30 325 driveshaft needs to be used for this tranny. This tranny has no overdrive and is recommended with a tall geared lsd. Use the M50 starter if using the M50 flywheel, use the M20 starter if using the M20 flywheel.

*The ZF tranny out of the later E36's can be used with the stock transmission cross member and you choice of tranny mounts as stated with other combo's above. Use the M50 starter if using the M50 flywheel, use the M20 starter if using the M20 flywheel. The informations gets a little shady here but from what I have seen these are the driveshafts that will work: 87-88 only E30 325e driveshaft, E30 M3-these are hard to find so are rarely used, 97-98 E36 5spd with a 4 bolt rear not CV joint rear flange, E36 328 or m3 manual from a 96-98. If you are having issues with shifting/sticking shifter with this tranny, check out this link.http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83577

-Cooling System-
The early E30 radiator and expansion tank will not work unless you start getting into custom lines. The Late E30 and E36 radiators will work. Use the M50 hoses, you may have to trim the top or bottom radiator hose. You can also use the m42 radiator, but I am not sure what lines to use. This will result in a cleaner looking bay, but less cooling capability due to the smaller core of the m42 radiator. The hose from the back of the head to the heater core I use an E30 one, it has a perfect 90* bend. This hose goes to the bottom inlet on the heater core the hose from under the manifold goes to the top. I also found that I had to bend the pipes on the heater core down and towards the booster to clear the intake manifold, not a lot, maybe 1/2 inch.
The cooling systems can be a pain to bleed. I recommend either doing it on a hill or putting the front of the car on jack stands, it has worked first time every time I have done it.

You are going to want to change the coolant sensor in the head under the intake manifold to the brown top E30 one so your cluster will read accuratly. It is going to be the one furthest from the front of the motor.

Before you add coolant I would reccomend changing the thermostat housing and upgrading to the aluminum one. The factory plastic ones are prone to cracking.

-Wiring- This isn't as bad as you would think it to be. There is tons of information available on this site alone. I'm not going to give you a bunch of different pin options, I am just going to give you a website to get any diagram you will need. Pretty much you just go through find anything with x20 or c101 and write down the color and where it goes, when you are all done you splice the two together and you have a harness. The X20 is from the E36 and the C101 is from the E30. http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm
I highly recommend you do your own wiring that way you are more familliar with it if you ever have to trouble shoot it. But if you are not one for wiring you can get harness from AKG Motorsport, Treehouse Racing and Zionsville.
