Here is a bit of a story I did on another forum regarding the build. More pics from a photoshoot I did with the car at http://www.qsm.com.au/show_wallpaper.php?id=66 I have gathered the various posts form another forum and will post them up here overe the next day or two. Has been a 5 year rebuild. 10 August 2005 Was the start. It will be very boring for a while as I am only getting the engine out, pulled down and then will start the rebuild closer to the end of the year. Over that time I will have done some other mod's and will post them as I go. Started today by cleaning the work area, and throwing it up on blocks. I am going to pull the bonnet, front nose panel and spoiler/s and a lot of the auxiliaries of the motor such as A/C, Radiator etc. I will keep up dating as I think it is of interest. The work Area http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/855.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/856.jpg When its asleep http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/857.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/858.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/859.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/860.jpg 20/09/05 Well today I finally pulled the motor. Took about 4 or so hours with 2 of us. Motor is off to mechanic now to be stripped and inspected. Block will be sent out to be bored out to 2.5 litre specs. Head is being ported and polished at the same time. It will then sit until I get all the parts needed before being rebuilt. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/861.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/862.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/863.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/864.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/865.jpg 21/09/05 Well dropped over to Simon Harrex my mechanic today and got given the diagnosis. As we suspected a spun bearing has played havoc on the inside of the block. The crank is beyond repair having had the #1 rod bearing seal itself to the crank and then proceed to crack the crank. The rod has also a small hairline crack in it that was about 10 seconds away from spitting itself through the block. #1 piston has been damaged from hitting the head but luckily, absolutely no damage to the head whatsoever. The crank, rods and pistons were destined for the bin anyway (actually we are going to use them for another project, non motor related) as I am getting a new EVO III forged crank taking the stroke from 84mm to 87mm. New forged rods obviously head and block are off to be cleaned up and we are going to wait for the pistons to arrive before the block is bored so the whole shebang can be blue printed properly. Each bored is honed to the exact specifics of each piston. New ARP Head Studs to lock the whole lot up. These are the bearings from the bottom end. The ones that let go are the 2 on the right. Note the thinness of them. The edges were like razors. You can also see the damage and discolouration to some of the others. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/866.jpg This is the shrapnel found in the sump. It’s about the size of a 10c piece. There were also lots of other smaller pieces. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/867.jpg This is the crank. You can see where the #1 rod joins the crank (closest to the timing chain end). The damaged journal is where the bearings melted to it. It also has a hairline fracture that can be seen upon a closer inspection. Again scorch marks on the other bearing journals. It’s now a $2000 paper weight. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/868.jpg Finally the pistons and rods. The pistons are pretty good bar 1. The rod that is damaged is the far left one. It is a bit hard to pick it up in the photo. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/869.jpg As a result of the diagnosis it made the decision to go to a 2.5 litre, let’s say, capable engine, far easier. I was kind of glad I didn’t get it opened and have to be told it’s hardly damaged and can be back together soon. The wait is becoming somewhat enjoyable. The cause: We think what has happened is that it may have suffered a bit of oil surge, thus allowing the oil pick up to be starved of oil for a bit, sending the bearings into panic mode and then bang. Because the oil pick up is on the right side of the sump and the S14 sump runs east west, they are notorious for this. I will be using a motorsport designed sump baffle in future. 26/06/2006 Got the head back from the engineers today. Completely rebuilt with heavier valve springs, valve seats redone and ported/polished both intake and exhaust. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/870.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/871.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/872.jpg My crank has been ordered from Don McAdams in Florida along with a few other goodies such as engine mounts, new water pump and EVO III oil pump. Have also ordered new custom 95mm forged pistons from Top-end Performance. Being made with a CR of 8:1.1 and will received a high heat ceramic coat treatment. Also ordered ARP head studs and a Cometic MLS head gasket. All should be here in about 8 weeks, as it takes 5-6 weeks to make them (pistons). Turbo is being sorted now and should be here in about 3 weeks. Then everything will go back to Simon to be re-assembled before going back into the car and then off to Exotic Exhaust's to have the custom ceramic coated manifold, dump pipe, Tial wastegate, blow off valve (plumbed back into the exhaust) and all plumbing done. Also getting a PWR intercooler and radiator fitted at the same time. Anyway that’s enough for now. 07/08/2006 A couple nice little packages today from Topend Performance. Excellent to deal with. Cometic MLS 1.8mm Head Gasket, ARP Head studs and my Custom 95mm JE pistons. 8.1:1 CR, ceramic coated crowns and moly coated skirts. I am expecting the crank from Fedex tomorrow. Ordered a re-ground one from BMW in the USA. Ooops to the service man, they ordered and packed a motorsport crank from Germany by mistake. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/873.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/874.jpg 08/08/2006 Well after a few weeks wait and quite a few dollars later, my crank finally arrived from Germany via Florida. Can’t complain the way it was packaged though. Packed like a true car nut, in a nice new Coleman Esky. Thanks to Don at McADAMS AUTOSPORT. I cannot recommend Don highly enough to do business with if you are after anything BMW . http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/875.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/876.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/877.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/878.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/879.jpg So only waiting on Turbo and few other bits and pieces and off to the engine builder it goes. 22/08/2006 Not a great deal happening whilst I await the arrival of my turbo/wastegate/BOV/injectors and a few other bits and pieces. Engine is going to hopefully be started end of next week. Test fitted the intercooler. I borrowed one the same size as the one I am getting as I am awaiting mine from PWR along with the radiator. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/880.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/881.jpg I am going to (well my panel sho is anyway) cut out the centre strip that runs along the opening to open it up and allow more air in there. The gap will be 450mm wide x 250 mm high. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/882.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/883.jpg 20/09/2006 Waiting for all the parts to arrive now. Ordered some Verdi Rods from Pure Performance Factory in Sweden. Garrett GT3076R .82 housing, 50mm Tial BOV and 44mm Tial Wastegate. I'll also get a PWR oil cooler once the intercooler is fitted as the I/C will take up most of where the oil cooler now resides, so I will move it to somewhere more appropriate. Engine should be back together in about 6 weeks hopefully. Back into the car to get the turbo manifold made and then hopefully be able to start the key before the year’s end.......hopefully. Custom PWR Radiator. It's about 32mm thicker than stock. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/884.jpg 500x300x73 Intercooler http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/885.jpg E30 M3 EVO III Oil Pump http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/886.jpg 9 Piece Samco Coolant Hose Kit and all new stainless steel clamps http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/887.jpg 21/09/2006 Little bit of sexual chocolate arrived today. My Verdi Rods from pure-pf.com in Sweden. These things are good for well over 900HP. Anadreas from Pure Performance Factory runs them in his Turbo Charged S38B38 motor and it is running a 9.xx 1/4 mile. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/888.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/889.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/890.jpg Also arrived was my new water pump from McAdams Autosport in the USA. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/891.jpg That’s everything for the motor now. Basically other than the Block and the Head, everything is brand new. Let the fun begin. 25/09/2006 Thanks to Ipec, the final delivery arrived today. GT3076R http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/892.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/893.jpg TIAL 48mm wastegate and 1.4 bar spring http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/894.jpg Turbosmart BOV http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/895.jpg Now, lets get building shall we. 18/10/2006 The block is back from the engineers after being bored to 95mm, decked and acid bathed. Crank, Pistons and Rods are away being balanced. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/896.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/897.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/898.jpg Has to be cleaned up now getting rid of all the burr's on the inside and then polish/painted to a smooth finish to allow the oil to flow back into the sump a bit more easily. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/899.jpg 24/10/2006 Got my block finally all cleaned up and painted. Got rid of all the casting burs etc and then coated it to allow the oil to flow back to the sump quicker. Hopefully, only about another 2 weeks before I can drop the engine into the car. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/900.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/901.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/902.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/903.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/904.jpg 26/10/2006 It is starting to gain some momentum now. Hopefully end of next week will see the motor back here ready to go into the car. Managed to get the Crank and pistons in today. The Crank, rods and Pistons were balanced yesturday. Had to leave for work early so all the pics I could get..... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/905.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/906.jpg Gapping the rings to the correct specs...... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/907.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/908.jpg Got the pistons all in..... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/909.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/910.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/911.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/912.jpg The pistons and Verdi Rods.... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/913.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/869.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/914.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/915.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/916.jpg Comparison between the stock BMW rods and Verdi rods...... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/917.jpg 28/10/2006 Managed to get all pistons in now and hopefully install the rest of the bottom end Monday. Should be finished next week. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/918.jpg 25/11/2006 Things are getting close. Engine complete. Should be in the car within a week or so........should be. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/919.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/920.jpg 06/04/2007 Should have been down at PI this weekend but alas it was not to be. Work has kept me flat out so nothing really progressed. But whilst enjoying a hot cross bun this morning I managed to jig up the Intercooler. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/921.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/922.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/923.jpg Got the last of the parts arriving soon form the states. E34 M5 cam sensor set up (fits the S14), E34 M5 TPS (pot style as opposed to switch) and a few other bits and pieces. PWR are making me a bigger oil cooler that will mount directly under the intercooler. Remote oil filter mount and asociated Aeroquip hoses and fittings. Also managed to pick up my ecu and ignition set up. Took it up to Ray Hall in Cairns on a recent work trip and had him have a good look over it. Installed a software version and ran it upto 10000rpm without any issues. Autronic SMC and Autronic 500R CDI with bosch coils. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/924.jpg Also lots of help from family... http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/925.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/926.jpg So its slowly progressing. Its been 2 yrs now since I blew it at Morgan Park................oh, and a few dollars as well. Those that think you can do this cheaply havent done it. Not sure how long to go. I remember asking kenny a heap of times when his would be finished and his answer was always "When its finished it will be finished". I understand what he means now. Just so many other factors. 09/05/2007 Project is on hold for a while as work is full on at the moment and between that and family, there doesnt seem to be enough time in the day. I have set the completion date back a bit......Hopefully it will be on the orad by the years end. Still managed to gather a few more parts from the list as needed. New Fuel system consisting of Aeromotive A1000 Fuel Pump,Fuel Fiter and Fuel Pressure Regulator. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/927.jpg New Bosch 550cc Injectors (mounted) compared to the old 240cc ones. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/928.jpg Complete E34 M5 Cam Sensor set up and Throttle Position Sensor that is a direct fitment to the S14 engine. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/929.jpg Also I am remote mounting the Oil Filter for ease of access once the plenum and inlet plumbing is in place. Earls Products make a direct fit application. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/930.jpg I was originally going with a PWR oil cooler but managed to get hold of a SETRAB one for same price that will be mounted behind one of my brake ducts. I also have one coming for the diff along with a Tilton oil pump and M Coupe Diff Housing. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/931.jpg I have a heap of Aeroquip Braided hoses and fittings coming from the states for all the oil/fuel etc plumbing. The cost spread sheet is looking very ordinary. What was due to be on the road 6 months ago will proberbly not be back until Dec 07.....hopefully. 13/07/2007 Quick teaser. It's all away being heat coated. Will be on by next week and I'll post up some pics of the turbo mounted. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/932.jpg 18/07/2007 Mmmm....progress. Now to start wiring this thing up. Lots more to do yet but at least it's on track to finished this year. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/933.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/934.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/935.jpg 25/10/2007 Dropped over to my workshop today for a quick hello. They have dtarted the plumbing etc. We are waiting on a Cam and Crank sensor setup from the USA. I am starting to get excited now........somewhat. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/936.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/937.jpg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.21pm Friday 9/5/08 the phone rings. "Hello" "Dave, Your M3 is finished and the engineer has just attached the approved mod plate" "WTF, woooooooohooooooooooo" Car is being wired up this week and hopefully started next weekend. I'll send it down to Matt Spry week after next. 1140 days in the making. 14/05/08 We started wiring up yesterday. Took 3 hours to disconnect the alarm system. Kudos to Moorooka Car Sound....they install a a mean car alarm and disabler. Anyways....... The engine room so to speak. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/938.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/939.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/940.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/941.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/942.jpg VAC Motorsports Cam Sensor http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/943.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/944.jpg The enlarged front bar opening...still looks somewhat factory. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/945.jpg The Autronic ECU and CDi 500R. The ECU is mounted under drivers seat. The CDI under the dash http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/946.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/947.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/948.jpg The all important Mod plate. 1 for when it was converted to RHD and one for the turbo. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/949.jpg One thing for sure, this isn't a 3 day job......oh well, whats another week or 2. 15/09/08 it all together.......well almost together. It is heading down the Gold Coast for decent detail next month. 3 1/2 yrs has taken its toll on the paint. Swirl marks are the least of the issues. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/950.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/951.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/952.jpg 12/03/09 Well its been a while since I have had anything to update. Finally sorted the wastegate problem. Now holds 7psi all the way to 6500 rpm. Heading back down the coast to get Matt Spry to do the final tune. I'll keep it at 12psi for a while. Planty of safety room me thinks. Couple of goodies arrived from the USA (finally thanks to customs). http://www.dcr62.net/Car%20Pics/E30%20M ... ntrol2.jpg http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/953.jpg 475lb fronts and 650lb rears. Waiting on my new front sparco strut brace........same as this. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/954.jpg 03/06/09 Car went into the workshop today for some suspension tweeks. Ground control suspension installed, ground control caster/camber plates installed, adjustable sway bar links and a few other mods. Also adding some roll centre spacers to compensate for the lowering of the font end. http://bimmerboost.com/images/imported/2010/12/955.jpg |
