I will add that I found the self-learning of the auto box on the BMW extremely frustrating. It would learn "Granny mode" during my daily drive to work in heavy traffic, then when I wanted a spirited response, like pulling out into traffic on a roundabout in auto mode it would be in the wrong gear which could be a bit dodgy sometimes while it sorted itself out to change down. Because of that I mostly drove it in steptronic mode. In contrast to that, Alpina removed the self-learning function from the gearbox software, so it works the same way in auto all the time regardless.
ALPINA boxes behaves quite differently from the BMW.
The unique part from the ALPINA box is to hold onto a gear until the absolote rev limit of that gear irrespective of whether you lift (say in mid corner or not) this is titally unlike the BMW box which will change up in the same situation even in it's manual mode.
