A man is driving home one evening, the road is clear and dry, no other traffic around and he finds himself driving at 65mph on the 60mph stretch of road he is on. Then, disaster, in his rear view mirror he sees the police car following him with its blue lights flashing. His first reaction is to try to outrun the police car. He floors it and accelerates but the police car stays with him. The chase continues for a couple of miles, then the man has second thoughts. Having had a little more time to think about his situation he realises that, being basically a law-abiding guy, his only option is to stop and face the music.

When he pulls over the traffic cop comes over to his car and to his great surprise instead of booking him the policeman offers him a proposition.

Look says the cop, I really should book you and you know it's a mandatory ban but you weren't really doing anything dangerous and it's nearly the end of my shift. I'm on holiday next week and I really don't want to be faced with all the extra paperwork if I can avoid it. If you can give me a good excuse for what you were doing then I'll forget about it. But it's got to be a GOOD excuse and NOT one I've heard before.

The man thinks for a minute then tells the policeman his story.

I've been married for seven years then yesterday when I got home from work I found my wife had gone - left me. She'd taken everything out of the house that could be moved; all the furniture all the kitchen equipment, tv, hi-fi, even the carpets and beds, all her clothes and all mine. She's emptied our joint bank account and maxed out all the credit cards. All I've got left is the clothes I'm wearing, an empty house and my car. And she left a note telling me that she's run off with a TRAFFIC COP and they're going to start a new life together.

So you can imagine the turmoil I was feeling when I saw your car behind me speeding towards me, I had to get away from it, but the faster I went the faster you went. But I just had to get away. I couldn't face it. It was only when I saw that you were alone in the car that I realised my mistake -

You see I thought YOU were the traffic cop she had run off with - and you were trying to BRING THE B!!!! BACK.

The officer said - take care on the rest of your journey sir and have a nice day.
