"Back to the ring in time for some evening lapping.
Golf, running Megasquirt. It was going well

I was going to take a few people out for passenger laps, did 2, came back into the carpark and had a drink. Started the car and it sounded dreadful

Jude kindly lent me her towrope and Lou towed me back to the campsite.
Tried turning the engine over with a socket on the crank and when No1 and 4 were at TDC, it was VERY hard to turn. The head would need to come off. Tried not be Mr Grumpy, but I knew it was something major..
Usual beers and fire

Next morning, I was up at 07:30 and whipped the cylinder head off. Ah.

No1 Cylinder has had a foreign object in the combustion chamber. (No3 was a touch lean too..)

Hmmm, piston damage too.

One poorly Golf

I know EXACTLY what happened. Builder error i`m afraid

When fitting the Megasquirt and inlets, I made a backplate to secure the airfilter. This was secured by aluminium brackets to the head to keep it stable. One of the bolts had vibrated loose and was sucked into the engine, where it made a right old mess. Damn and double Damn.
Spoke to Chris Slator to discuss options and Andy Carlisle. THere were spare parts at Brens and his old, knackered engine. I wonder if there are enough parts to fix my Golf ??
Trailered the Golf to Sliders, seemed a much more sensible option to do it there.

One patient, prepped for surgery.

Andy had done a spectacular job of destroying the Engine in the Jetta last year. 3 pistons were dead, but one held a faint glimmer of home. Removed it from the engine and yeah, this might actually work !

One donor piston

Bren had a spare cylinder head he`d sourced last year, but the cams wouldn`t turn when ANdy and I fitted it last year. We removed the cams and followers from my head, fitted them to the donor head and they turned

Removed the sump from my engine (Hate those bolts at the bellhousing end !), removed the conrod bolts and removed one dead piston.

I See you.

Fitted my shells to the new piston, no ring compressor, which made installation a bit harder than usual. But here is the piston almost in the block

2 Hours later and it runs :veryhappy:

A big thanks to Bren for letting me use his old engine for spares and to Andy who made the job so much easier. There are certain times when 2 hands aren`t enough and having him help made a difficult job easier. Thanks mate.
Trailer back to the campsite and had a well earned beer. The acid test is tomorrow when I take it on the ring.... (it ran perfectly and it still doing so, 20 laps later

)"
