I will only state facts here, I do NOT want to speculate/armchair quarterback.
I saw Galloping Ghost when it was being modified for the racing duty. I will withhold the name of the shop.

The guy who owns the shop told us on several occasions that the modifications that the owner was requesting (chopping wings shorter, removing cooling ducts, generally trimming for aerodynamics) made the plane significantly more unstable, and that it would be a scary plane to fly fast. He specifically said there was significant reduction in controllability.
Needless to say it was a bit ironic and scary when I saw the plane that had crashed at Reno today.
